I’ll always think of him as a savvy negotiator (witness the mega-TV contract he nailed down for the Ryder Cup with NBC). In terms of challenges there’s the matter of boosting the PGA Championship to the status of something more than the afterthought major and of finding the right venues for the newly rejiggered schedule.
Nah that honor still belongs to Dustin Johnson. DJ has two wins and two third-place finishes in his last five starts the only aberration coming with an MC at the British Open. Nice win by JT though! Not only is JT coming in scorching hot he’s been stellar all season long backing up last year’s breakthrough. I’ll take him over DJ.
His most significant work is the hardest to measureAre there more and better opportunities for the 29000 PGA of America members? That becomes especially difficult when the game is struggling in quarters. More than anything I think Bevacqua added a certain gravitas to the position and to the organization.
At 425 yards No. 1 is one of the shorter par 4s at Bellerive. Rory and Tiger find the fairway while it looks like JT ends up in the left-side bunker. Leaderboard update: Four players are now at -3: JT Rafa Cabrella-Bello Stewart Cink and Rickie who birdied two of his last three holes!
(@Jeff_Ritter)Both are great picks so I’d split the difference and say the favorite is Dustin Thomas. Both guys look unstoppable when locked in. Either could win at Bellerive by five shots or more and it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising.
Woods with a wedge in hand…and he stuffs it to about a foot! Kick-in birdie approaching. JT will have about 5 feet Rory 12. On 12 all 3 guys hit driver and all find the short grass. Woods needed a fairway there.
I think they’re the best European team since…2012? Sure the Molinari win coupled with Rose and Rory T2 made them all feel nice and cozy. But there’s something I’d really like to stress about Ryder reactions to individual eventsThey’re not that connected! It’s natural to get excited when that happens but it means next to nothing for how they’ll play in Paris.
TV showed a lot of Tiger’s warm-up session this morning. If I had to describe it in three words it would be “a warm-up session.” Everything seems fine. He’s heading to the tee and off soon with Rory and JT.
I’ll never give up on McIlroy. I think the PGA is likely harder for him to get up for than say the Masters but I expect that fact will serve him well in St. Louis.
Bryson like Jordan Spieth tends to get extremely uh verbal when things start going south. That made this implosion all the more compellingwe could hear his internal monologue. A bad finish is just a bad finish unless it proves to be something more. How will DeChambeau respond?
Bigly (if I am using that correctly). Significantly. Props to Chamblee for qualifying but qualifying is one thing and contending is another. The nod goes to Watson and it’s not really close. Adding to that Brandel’s qualifier was just 18 holes. Tom Watson contended into Sunday! These two are really not quite comparable. Watson’s was far far more impressive.
Does prohibitive mean you cannot make a case for somebody else? I’ll make a case against JT and his sunshine bandit is extremely difficult to do it for eight consecutive rounds. Four is hard five is harder — then there’s six and seven. Eight is way way hard.
