Tiger has about 300 yards left to the green and he opts to lay up with an iron landing safely in the fairway. JT is a few yards ahead of Tiger in the same bunker and also lays up. Rory meanwhile has a lie that is much worse than it looked originally and is forced to lay up as well.
I’m guessing he’ll dig deep here to make the Ryder Cup team on points. That driving range “episode” — it was hardly an episode. It showed SOMEBODY WHO CARES and somebody who uses the range as Francesco Molinari does as a place to try out the shots you will actually need in competition. So if the shots are lousy you have a reason to be upset. As for the poor play in Germany he’s too smart and too talented not to learn from that. I’m bullish on him in every way.
This Euro team is filled with a lot of really good players and Carnoustie did nothing to really further prove or denounce that. If those guys play well at say back-to-back playoff events in a month then I’m inclined to respect Monty’s reaction.
You can set my Mc-o-Meter to “bummed out.” Rory keeps teasing us with glimpses of winning form only to snatch them away; remember his Sunday surge at Carnoustie? That was a blast. But the letdowns have been many and varied of late for Rory. I still expect him to play well at Bellerive but my guard is distinctly up.
He hits a rising bullet that escape the trees…only to hook hard and re-enter the trouble farther down the fairway. Thomas and McIlroy find the green inside 20 feet for birdies. And now another Tiger escape shot coming.
Bigly (if I am using that correctly). Significantly. Props to Chamblee for qualifying but qualifying is one thing and contending is another. The nod goes to Watson and it’s not really close. Adding to that Brandel’s qualifier was just 18 holes. Tom Watson contended into Sunday! These two are really not quite comparable. Watson’s was far far more impressive.
Can’t sum it up any better. I do think Finau’s major-championship consistency would help his case. But for that last spot don’t you want to roll out a fiery rookie? I think Bryson would actually be a great pick. Let’s see how these next few weeks play out.
It was captivating TV and I certainly felt bad for him. But this would only cost him a Ryder Cup spot if it happened the week before captain’s picks and it was clear a spot was on the line. Final-round bust-ups happen. He has a few more weeks to make a statement and in the process make the team.
I second third and fourth those comments. I’ve used this before and I’ll use it again (it’s from Sandy Tatum)“He has a swing that will not quit.” Chamblee showed some nerve by playing. Had he shot 80-80 — and golf is as others have noted a funny game — there would have been some who would have rejoiced with told-you-sos. Good for Brandel for trying but you cannot compare what the two golfers have done or did do.
And Tiger pours it in! That was a heck of a par. He even smiled at that one. He’s still +2. Woods from the left trees 70 yards away. And the shot clips a limb…and lands next to cup! Wow that was almost a disaster but instead it coziest past to about 7 feet. That’s for a par save.
What I expect to see from Tiger is more of what we’ve seen since his comebackOld Tiger brilliance mixed with New Tiger glitches. That may wind up being good enough to win. That doesn’t make him the real-world favorite but Vegas and the public might make him the gambling favorite. So it goes when you are Tiger Woods Old or New. I suspect we’ll see much of the same at the PGA.
I think they’re the best European team since…2012? Sure the Molinari win coupled with Rose and Rory T2 made them all feel nice and cozy. But there’s something I’d really like to stress about Ryder reactions to individual eventsThey’re not that connected! It’s natural to get excited when that happens but it means next to nothing for how they’ll play in Paris.
