On the 241-yard par-3 16th McIlroy and Thomas find the green but not close to the hole. Woods overcooks and iron long and left and it settles next to the grandstand. Thomas kicks in his third birdie of the opening nine and he’s tied for the lead and looking totally in control. McIlroy pars to stay -1.
The first seven names in the current standings will be on the team even if any of them somehow get bumped out of the top eight. Tiger and Phil are locks too so that leaves three spots.
138 yards left for JT. This is a big green with the pin cut on the very back. JT overcooks it just a bit and it hangs on the fringe of the green off the back about 10 feet from the hole.
Tiger Woods. Why not? He’s excelled at hot-weather PGA Championship venues with four victories. With the forecast for St. Louis as hot and muggy all week it favors Tiger. Tiger loves brawny 1960s-style courses with eight wins apiece at Firestone Torrey Pines and Bay Hill alone.
There’s a legal term for thissplitting the baby. It’s a bad compromise that will be a mess to enforce. The USGA shoulda just banned all green-reading materials whole-cloth.
On the par-3 13th Woods knocks one to about 15 for a good look at birdie. Rory finishes with twirl and his ball settles about 10 feet away. JT misses the green. JT drains it to drop to -2. Woods gets back to +2.
Nah that honor still belongs to Dustin Johnson. DJ has two wins and two third-place finishes in his last five starts the only aberration coming with an MC at the British Open. Nice win by JT though! Not only is JT coming in scorching hot he’s been stellar all season long backing up last year’s breakthrough. I’ll take him over DJ.
A group of my buddies have been going through this exact debate in thinking about a future golf trip; I’ve never been to either so I’m little use but I’d have assumed Scotland would get the nod. Needless to say Coyne has me intrigued…
I think they’re the best European team since…2012? Sure the Molinari win coupled with Rose and Rory T2 made them all feel nice and cozy. But there’s something I’d really like to stress about Ryder reactions to individual eventsThey’re not that connected! It’s natural to get excited when that happens but it means next to nothing for how they’ll play in Paris.
142 left for JT and he too hits it pretty tight just outside of Tiger. Rory meanwhile has 137 from the right rough and gets a flyer which lands over the green. 184 yards left for Tiger. He nails it! Looks like about three feet left for birdie and the gallery loves it.
Bubba Watson. It’s been an incredible year for Bubba and it continues this week when he picks apart Bellerive with that pink driver. Sleeper: Hossler has been there all year. He’s shown the ability to play his way into contention at normal Tour stops. I think he avoids the weekend blow-up that has normally followed and bags himself his first top 10 in a major.
